Thank you for your interest in Gogolin & Assoc. We are a group of consultant who help firms develop coating
processes and equipment and solve related process problems. We work with companies doing all types of coating application
onto substrates such as paper, nonwovens, film and foil web materials. We have been consultants to the coating
industry for over eight years. Many of us were at Polaroid Corporation where we supported numerous coating and
chemical operations.
We concentrate in the following areas:
- We work with clients who want to improve yields and quality by helping to solve problems or improve processes.
- We help clients to develop new coating processes
- For many of our clients, we search out contract coating houses who are interested in developing new coating processes
or manufacturing a coated product.
- We support clients who are making selection decisions for new or upgraded coating processes, equipment or instrumentation.
- We evaluate a company's facilities, processes, equipment and support staff in comparison to the coating industry
norm.
- We offer training seminars to engineers and/or operators in all elements of the web coating process.
Following is some detailed information about Larry Gogolin. If your project requires other members of our group.
I will forward a copy of their background. Please give us a call to discuss your project and we will generate a
proposal for your review.
CONSULTANTS IN COATING PROCESS DEVELOPMENT
& MANUFACTURING
Larry Gogolin develops coating application methods and processes for manufacturing. He concentrates on meeting
your customers requirements with strategies to produce a product and process high in quality, productivity and
yield. He has more than 25 years of proven experience in the technical, quality and consulting aspects of coating.
Prior to becoming a Technical Consultant in the process, chemical and coating areas, Larry spent 23 years at Polaroid
Corp. While there he managed the quality and technical support groups, developing and sourcing raw materials, optimizing
processes on chemical mixing and reacting units and web coaters.
He also led the technical group that contracted Polaroid's excess coating capacity to external customers and helped
develop specifications and sourcing for new coating equipment.
Larry has worked with clients to review specifications for new coating equipment for different products ranging
from $1M to $30M; resolved curl and wrinkling problems with paper base materials saving significant dollars in
yield losses. He has sourced web materials and developed coating processes and specifications for clients with
unique product requirements; eliminated capital expenditures for smaller firms by developing products and processes
with contract coating facilities for medical, imaging, electronics, printing, battery, energy control & packaging
materials.
He has worked with research, pilot and development groups, process development and new product introduction, new
plant construction and start-up and retrofitting. He has worked with manufacturing firms, who use all types of
coating processes, to assess their capabilities within the industry and help with trouble shooting and problem
solving.
He has implemented statistical process capability studies and process control programs. Larry also gives seminars
in coating, drying and converting technology to in-plant groups.
Larry has a Masters Degree in Engineering Management and a B. S. degree in Chemical Engineering.

- Evaluated sources for contract coating of various web products
I have been involved with coating for over 20 years. Specific projects have included:
PROCESS DEVELOPMENT
- Developed a multilayer coating method and conducted pilot evaluations of a proprietary fluid, to be coated on
one mil titanium foil, for electronic applications.
- Assisted the R&D group of a major corporation in learning about coating methods and equipment, to allow coating
of cathode and anodes materials for electric car battery application.
- Developed a coating process and ran pilot evaluations for a scavenger fluid onto a porous web for use in batteries.
- Improved a coating process of solvent paint onto thin steel for photographic film components.
- Suggested process changes to improve quality of coatings of a protective solvent layer and an active photoresist
materials onto copper, magnesium and zinc.
- Suggested improvements in meniscus and spin coating of photoresists onto glass for subsequent transfer. Also
helped develop a process for coating photoresist and adhesives onto polyester webs.
- Developed a coating method, sourced a contract coating house and scaled up into production, the coating of a
conductive polymer onto a platinum film layer, on a polyester substrate.
- Through seminars and tutorials, taught clients the basic principals in coating technology so they could move
into new processing areas requiring coating/drying of films.
- Developed specifications and sourced raw materials for paper and film bases, sputter coatings and fluids.
- Sourced contract coating firms to develop and manufacture coated products for numerous clients. Products included
conductive coatings, coatings for window films and imaging layers, aerospace, electronic display.
- Helped a client develop a coating process from R&D into a manufacturable system. The coating was a series
of polymers in organic solvents which were coated onto polyester and paper webs. These films were used in batteries.
EQUIPMENT
- Reviewed specifications for coating lines costing around $8 million for completeness, relationship to product
requirements and future uses.
- Developed equipment specifications for new and used pilot and production coating and slitting lines, ranging
from $50K to $50 million. Obtained quotations and sourced vendors for construction and installation.
- Reviewed equipment for upgrade and retrofit to improve coating/drying capabilities and obtained vendor quotations.
Included precision roll and slot coating heads and ovens.
- Developed specifications and screened vendors for on-line thickness monitors for a number of clients. Coatings
ranges from thin film organics on polyester to aqueous fluids on paper.
- Developed specifications, sourced vendor and managed the installation and startup of a $400K solvent ink dispensing
system. The project utilized the operations group in the team concept of participation.
- Introduced clients to slot die coating techniques and supported pilot trials and manufacturing of the coating
heads.
PROBLEM SOLVING
- Ran experiments on solvent gravure coatings to justify new, automatic in-line viscosity control systems to improve
coating quality.
- Created and maintained a computerized material balance monitoring system for tracking the VOC emissions from
a division utilizing over 1 million pounds of organic solvent per year.
- Lead a project to quantify and reduce the toxic wastes from a wire and cable coating company.
- Helped a client sort out a web tracking problem to be caused by the material of the paper web and not the machine
tracking.
- Generated coatability improvements for clients with thickness control and coating quality in roll, curtain and
other coating application systems.
- Solved a curl issue in a hot melt coating process by tracing the problem back to stresses developed in the raw
substrate. The base material was a primed woven polyester fabric. The priming process had imparted stresses which
were relieved after the hot melt coating.
- Reviewed a membrane manufacturing process from mixing and raw materials, through forming, washing drying treatment
and web handling and finishing. Recommendations were made which improved the speed, efficiency and quality yields.
OTHER
- Conducted management reviews in coating firms to determine their capabilities and competitive edge vs. the competition.
The outcome was the generation of a manufacturing strategy report.
- Helped client coating firms assess their position in the Contract coating Industry. Compared their coating equipment,
technical staff and capabilities to the competition.
- Conducted search for sources of thin foil (Cu, Al, Ti) and converters and processors of these 1-2 mil materials
